25th Anniversary report
The Fairway Club was organized and first match played at the old Aronimink Golf Club in April 1919. It was patterned after the “Ozone Club”, a Quaker golfing group started in 1901. Several matches were played with the Ozone Club in the early 1920’s resulting in decisive victories for the younger Fairway Club.
By 1931, the membership waiting list had grown so large that a number of prospective members decided to organize on their own, thus, the Wayfair Club was born. A friendly rivalry developed and has been maintained over the years. The Union League in Philadelphia provided a daily meeting place for both clubs where members shared a Fairway-Wayfair table and conducted regular verbal battles concerning past and future tournaments. The Wayfair Club is still in existence, but plays a somewhat more limited event schedule than the Fairway Club.
Our membership was originally limited to thirty-two active members, and since increased to thirty-six active members plus eight members-in-waiting. The object of the club is to promote friendly competition and to open up opportunities for everyone to enjoy the game of golf at a representative sample of our fine member courses. In order to accomplish this, it is desired that you attend as many outings as possible. Lunch, cocktails and dinner are also very much a part of the golf outing. It is expected that you be “onboard” for most of these.
